While Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince) written by Antoine De Saint-Exupéry in 1943 now has over 300 translations in different languages worldwide and is now considered the world’s most translated book (not counting religious works), there have been surprisingly only two translations of his book in the Philippines (Filipino and Bicol). El Diutay Principe is only the third edition featuring a Philippine language. The Little Prince is a classic French novella about a pilot who gets stranded in the desert after a plane crash and encounters a little fellow who asks him to draw a sheep for him. Through the course of their meeting, the pilot rediscovers the true meaning of life and what people should value the most. When I came across the book in 2013, I found that I could relate very well to the negative image given to “growing up” in the book. When the idea to translate the book into my mother tongue was presented to me, I didn’t think twice. I thought, ‘a lot of people my
I remember watching a documentary by Howie Severino about the Chabacano in Cavite where a kid was asked to speak Chabacano. The kid says: taga donde vos then his dad tells him it should be de donde vos. I find it amusing and a bit ironic actually that the Chabacano in Zamboanga is starting to sound closer and closer to its cousin in Cavite which uses Tagalog particles.
When I told my friend that there are now more people speaking Tagalog than Chabacano in downtown Zamboanga, she said to me sana Chabacano lang pa rin. Since we were talking in Chabacano, I was like did she just say that in Chabacano or Tagalog?
Over time, perhaps due to social media, economics, and television, Tagalog has crept into the Chabacano language and replaced Chabacano particles, words that we use everyday. Here is a list of Tagalog particles (or words) which have recently entered the Chabacano language. The Chabacano word is enclosed in parenthesis while below the word pairs are some (unedited) examples of posts found in Facebook using them.

8. Kaya (Gaha)
Sometimes, the Chabacano word gaha does not equate to yata. In some cases, gaha equates to kaya in Tagalog. Kaya is also now being used in Chabacano instead of gaha.

*The last two example sentences using kasi will need to change its word order if kay will be used instead. The first example will become: Chene kamo load?Kay iyo nuay. The second sentence will be: Kay hinde iyo 4Ps nuay tamen iyo na SAP. Nuay tamen relief goods ya ricibi. Pero baliskat el rice cooker. The word por causa can also be used in the second example instead of kay. The reason for this shift in word order is using kasi in this manner employs a Tagalog word order while using kay will require a Cebuano (or maybe Hiligaynon) word order.
10. Kaya (Por eso)
Sometimes, the Tagalog word kaya does not equate to gaha in Chabacano. In some cases, kaya equates to por eso in Chabacano. Kaya is also now being used in Chabacano instead of por eso.
Dimio man era ele, pero cuntigo man ele kiere kaya dituyu ya.
MAL KUSTUMBRE bo kaya MANADA kombo RABYAW
Temprano pa pureso nuway pa hente durmido pa sila hehehe
Pureso oi el consejo de bieho hahaha
In my opinion, dapat and kasi have entered into Chabacano not exactly recently but more like the early 2000s. I think you will find that there are more people using it compared to the other words in the list which have started entering the Chabacano language only probably during the last 10 years.
While there are definitely many Tagalog words which are now being used interchangeably with Chabacano ones, I thought it noteworthy to bring attention to these words because they are words which are used heavily (probably almost every time we speak). I think it shows the beginning of a new direction that Chabacano is heading for in the future. It might mean that there are now so many Chabacano speakers who only speak it as a third or fourth language and that they might now be influencing the Chabacano language greatly. It might also mean that the influence of Tagalog is now so palpable among Chabacano speakers that we have began replacing common Chabacano words for their Tagalog counterparts.
These Tagalog words are recent additions and maybe in the future they will be acceptable. Their usage is now becoming widespread but I'm pretty sure there are still a lot of Chabacano speakers (even young ones) who don't use these words and will consider usage of these words when speaking Chabacano as incorrect.
Most of the Facebook posts above were written during the pandemic so some are angry about the situation or at the government. Some are about unrequited love and are quite emo. Others are just rantings.
This article was also published in the International Year of Indigenous Languages Philippines website.
This is negative effect of IMPOSED Tagalog on us NON-Tagalog Nations, and this is also the Negative Effect when our own Ethnic's Language is NOT institutionalized.
